SUNSET KAYAK TOUR

The best way to see 1770 is from the water

Watch an ocean sunset from a kayak - 4:15pm/$65/2.5hrs

Join our friendly and experienced guide at 1770 Liquid Adventures on a fully guided sunset kayak tour through the magnificent waters of 1770 and around the Sir Joseph Banks Conservation area. The best way to discover 1770 is from a kayak.

  • The Town of 1770 is the only place on the coast of Queensland where you can watch an ocean sunset from a kayak! The clear, calm waters are perfect for a kayak adventure.

  • Our kayak tour starts at the 1770 foreshore, where you meet your tour guide and fellow paddlers. After pairing up for the double kayaks, we get our gear on and get some tips on safety and paddling techniques.

  • You will paddle past Captain Cook's landing point, stop at a secluded beach or sandbar and then on to the headland, to spot wild dolphins*, turtles and other marine and bird life.

  • The paddle can include going through some waves and into open water (depending on conditions), so make sure you are up for a bit of action!

  • Enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks while watching the sun go down over Bustard Bay.

  • Finish the day by watching one of 1770′s famous sunsets over the ocean while you paddle your kayak back along the 1770 foreshore.

  • We only take small groups of 12 paddlers maximum on this tour.

A few important things to consider:

  • Children aged 12 years and older are welcome to join the tour if paddling with an adult. For younger kids, please  check out our Family tour or our Nature tour.

  • If you are over the age of 55 please be aware that this tour can be a challenge for some people. You need to be able to sit in the kayak for a prolonged time and be able to get in and out several times. If you have exisiting back, shoulder or hip problems, this tour may not be for you. If you are unsure, please call us and have a chat to us, we are always happy to give advice and the conditions can make a big difference too.

Important to know - Please read!

Weight limit

Maximum weight per person is 120kg. The combined weight limit in a double kayak is 190kg.

Alcohol

Please refrain from consuming alcohol prior to the tour.

Double kayaks

We use double kayaks. If you are travelling by yourself or in a group with an uneven number, we may pair you up with someone else or ask you to paddle a single kayak.

Can it get wet?

Assume EVERYTHING can get wet. Don't bring things that aren't going to survive a fall into saltwater!

Dolphins

The dolphins are WILD and we cannot guarantee a sighting. We will always do our very best to spot them and we know where to look for them.

Small groups

We take a maximum of 12 people on the Sunset tour.

Weather & Tides

We get affected by wind and tide and some days can be easier than others...please contact us if you are unsure about the weather or your abilities or fitness level.

  • Will I get wet?
Short answer: Yes. The degree of saturation depends a little bit on the activity (surf kayaking 100% saturation highly probable) and on your skills. But you will always get a little bit wet as we use sit-on-top kayaks and there will alwasy be a bit of splash from the paddle. Assume that you can fall out and everything will be wet. You can hire a drybag to keep personal belongings dry.
  • Will I see dolphins?
We cannot guarantee dolphin sightings, as they are wild dolphins. However, we always try our very best to spot them and with 13 years experience in 1770, we know where to look and what to look for. It is possible to see dolphins on all our tours and on a hire but your chances are best on the sunset tour.
  • Do you cancel a tour if it rains?
Not necessarily. If we get a little shower or two, we will still go ahead. Thunderstorms and lightning will have the tours cancelled. If it looks like heavy rain the entire time we will usually cancel too.
  • Is there a weight limit?
Yes. Paddlers must not weigh more than 120kg. The combined weight limit in a double kayak is 190kg.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made within 48hrs of departure time incur a 100% cancellation fee. Cancellations made with more than 48hrs notice incur an administration charge of 10% of total booking fee. We encourage customers to purchase travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances.
  • Can kids paddle a single kayak?
Short answer: no. But... Due to tides/currents and the size of our single kayaks, we do not let children paddle a single kayak. For older kids, it can be arranged but it would depend on their size/ability as well as the conditions on the day. In general, the minimum age to paddle a single kayak is 14, but in reality it will depend on the conditions on the day.
  • If it is overcast, will the sunset tour still go ahead?
Absolutely! The sunset is only a small part of our 2.5hr tour and we will go ahead if it is cloudy. There is never a guarantee that the sunset will be beautiful, as nature can be unpredictable.
  • Do many people fall out of the kayak?
Not many, no. We use quality, stable kayaks but it's not impossible to tip them and fall out. Generally, the more weight is in the kayak, the easier they tip over. But it really doesn't happen very often.
  • Should I wear sunglasses on the tour?
We recommend you do, but be prepeared to lose them if you fall out. If your sunglasses are worth hundreds of dollars, maybe grab a cheap pair or make sure to use sunglass straps.
  • What should I wear?
Totally up to you! Most people wear swimwear and a t-shirt and shorts over the top. Just wear anything you don't mind getting a bit wet in and not your Sunday Best!
  • Do you take children on tours?
Yes, we certainly do. We have a tour especially for families with kids aged between 4 and 12 years old. 10 years and older are welcome on the nature tour if paddling with an adult and 12 years and older can join the sunset tour with an adult.
  • How hard are the tours?
The tours are all very different, but all are suited to beginners. However, we do get affected by wind and tide and some days can be easier than others...please contact us if you are unsure about the weather or your abilities or fitness level.
  • Do you refund if the tour is cancelled?
You will get a 100% refund if we cancel the tour.
  • Is there an age limit?
Not so much an age limit but it depends on your fitness level and abilities. If you are over the age of 55 be aware that the tours can be a challenge for some people! You need to be able to sit in the kayak for a prolonged time and be able to get in and out several times. If you have exisiting back, shoulder or hip problems, this tour may not be for you. If unsure, please call us and have a chat to us!
  • Can I paddle in a single kayak on the tour if I want to?
We used double kayaks and we only use a single kayak if there is an uneven number of participants.
  • I travel by myself, can I join the tours?
Yes, you certainly can. We ask you to contact us before making a booking so we can make sure you are happy to paddle a single kayak or be paired up with someone else depending on numbers.
  • Where are you located?
We operate from a small beach 200m PAST the 1770 Marina/boat ramp. Very easy to find.
  • Can I bring my dog?
We encourage people to bring their dog on a kayak hire if they wish. Dogs are NOT allowed on any of our guided tours.
